Use 14 pc more energy as compared to their national counterparts

When it comes to saving energy, hospitals across Mumbai, including some of the renowned ones, are less smart in comparison to their national counterparts.

According to Confederation of Indian Industries’ (CII) special report on ‘Green Hospitals Survey’ that was made public yesterday, at Mahim’s Hinduja Hospital, more than 60 per cent hospitals and healthcare facilities in the city fail to meet the minimum Energy Performance Index (EPI) of 200KWh/sq/annum.

“The findings of the study, which was done over  sample of 17 hospitals clearly reveals that hospitals in Mumbai are not smart when it comes to saving energy, though there is tremendous scope for doing so,” said Alkesh Solanki of Schneider Electric, the firm which assisted CII in the survey.

The EPI, also termed as Specific Energy Consumption (SEC) is defined as total energy consumption per unit of built-up area of the building for a year.

According to the report, the average energy cost per bed for hospitals in Mumbai is 465 KWh/sq.mts/year against the national average of 365 KWh/sq.mts/year.

The average SEC of hospitals outside the metropolis is 250 KWh/sq.mts/year which is lesser than the national average. Moreover, the minimum EPI found in one of the prominent hospitals in Mumbai was 260 KWh/sq.mts/year.

The Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC), a document that specifies the energy performance requirements for commercial building in India mandates a minimum EPI of 200KWh/ Sq.mts/ year for a building in a warm and humid climate zone such as Mumbai.
