The Mumbai crime branch on Tuesday claimed that Jigna Vora was one of the crucial conspirators in the killing of journalist Jyotirmoy Dey by submitting its supplementary chargesheet. This claim was based on all the possible angles and evidences – electronic, circumstantial and testimonial – and the description of Vora’s conduct before and after Dey’s murder on June 11, 2011.
“This includes a complete analysis of the events – directly and indirectly – that transpired before and after Dey’s murder, Vora’s sudden trip to Sikkim and Darjeeling on June 9 till June 18, the sudden increase in the number of calls she made to gangster Chhota Rajan and his associates as well as certain reasons which makes Vora’s role apparent Dey’s murder conspiracy,” said Himanshu Roy, joint
commissioner of police (crime).
However, the absence of the facts in the chargesheet about the two crucial calls made by Rajan to Dey on June 9 becomes a bit intriguing. As it was on this particular day that the deceased Dey was upset after the two calls and it was the same day that Vora suddenly left the city to Sikkim and Darjeeling, which had made the police suspect about her becoming aware of Rajan’s final plan to eliminate Dey.
The ADC, in its June 28 report, had first highlighted about these two calls, which lasted for 90 minutes, in which Dey received two back to back calls from VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) number. These calls were made by Rajan himself and on both the calls, Dey and Rajan spoke at length with each other. It was after these two calls that Dey was kind of disappointed and upset after which the latter did not pick up the third call also done by Rajan on the same day.
Commenting on the missing fact in the chargesheet submitted on Tuesday, JCP Roy told ADC, “I would not like to comment about the non-mentioning of this particular event in the chargesheet.” Adding further Roy said, “We have several strong evidences against Vora, which is enough to convict her under the stringent sections of MCOCA.”
Crucial points in the chargesheet
Citing examples that reflected professional rivalry between Vora and Dey, police said that on May 19 last year, Dey had published an article stating that underworld don Dawood Ibrahim had left Pakistan.
"We have evidence that on May 25, Vora telephoned Rajan to verify if Dawood had left Pakistan. Subsequently on May 26, she had written a story falsifying Dey's news story," Police said that all these details have been elaborated in the charge sheet.
"Rajan had told Paulson (an accused in the case) to get global roaming SIM cards in March 2011 which were used in the crime," Roy said and added that Dey was in London between April 20 and May 6, 2011 and had asked Rajan to meet him there which the gangster suspected was a trap to eliminate him. There were at least 36 telephone conversations between Rajan and Vora between the month of May and June before the murder. We have attached those details.
On 30th May, Dey published an article saying Rajan has become old and his gang has weakened. Around this time, there were several calls between Jigna and co-accused Paulson. The phone calls graph analysis indicates her ill intentions, said police.
